Director’s Moment

Diane Ravitch recently wrote a perspective article called “My View, Rhee is wrong and misinformed” on Michelle Rhee and her beliefs about some of her stances on education. If you have ever had a question about international comparisons on education or merit pay you should take the time to read this article. I highly recommend that every educator read this article. Please understand it is an opinion, but it speaks to the heart of the matter of what we are facing every day. I would like to hear your views of this article if you would like to share them with me via e-mail. It is a quick read as well.

Here is the link (May need to copy and paste into your browser):

Lots of great things happened this past week. We welcomed thousands of students back to Cleveland City Schools. I had the privilege of seeing most of the students in their classrooms this past week. Also we welcomed you, our faculty and staff, back as well. I love seeing our teachers and students back in their school environments. It is a great sight!

We had a great Convocation and even gave a one-year lease on a car away to a great educator, Ms. Hielene Tubbs! We would love to thank FM 104.1, Mr. Steve Hartline, and Don Ledford Automotive, Mrs. Debbie Melton and Mr. Chuck Hanes for sponsoring this give-away. We sincerely appreciate their generosity.

So, as our first full week begins, we welcome in our kindergartners this week and we will get this year fully underway. I wish each of you the very best this school year.

UNITED WAY:

This week is the official United Way kick-off as The United Way welcomes John Smoltz, former pitcher for the Atlanta Braves (and Boston Red Sox) to the kickoff celebration Wednesday. If you are supporting the United Way drive at your perspective school this year, please do so by Monday (tomorrow) so it will count for Cleveland City Schools.

It was great to see the Boys in Blue scrimmaging this past Saturday night as they took the victory 7-0 against Howard High down at UTC stadium in a 20 minute scrimmage. The official football season kicks off this upcoming weekend up at Alcoa High School as we will be taking on Maryville High at 5:00 PM Saturday.
