Public Engagement/Parent Involvement Plan

Goal Statement:  Foster positive and effective school and community relations.
 
Objective 1:  Provide timely and continuous flow of information to parents about the school, curriculum, academic standards, discipline codes, school programs, methods of assessment and parental involvement.
Action Plan:

1.   A daily communicator called KidMail will be sent home each day that lists homework, classroom activities, discipline issues, and other important information.

2.   Frequent newsletters, flyers and calendars will be sent home in KidMail to inform the parents of upcoming events and activities.

3.   Parents will also be informed about important events and announcements through the Connect Ed phone messages at least once a month.

4.   The school will host a Back to School Celebration/Registration Event, Open House and Grade-level Parent Meetings early in the school year to inform parents about school procedures; academic standards; curriculum; assessment and proficiency levels; opportunities for parental involvement and classroom observation; and student work.

5.   The school will distribute an updated written parent involvement plan to parents and the community.

6.   The school will maintain a web page.

7.   The school will provide a Student/Parent Handbook for all families that explains school rules, procedures, discipline code and other pertinent information.

8.   The homework policy will be listed in the Student Handbook.

9.   Teacher and administrator will hold parent conferences and/or meetings as requested or as the need arises.

10.  A translator or translated messages will be available for Spanish speaking parents.

11. Teachers will send out regular reports keeping parents abreast of each student's progress.

12.  Opportunities for training in family literacy and using technology will be provided during the school year.

 
Objective 2: Encourage families to support schools by volunteering for in-classroom assistance, tutoring, clerical duties, field trips, and school activities or events.

Action Plan:

1.   School will sponsor a Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and hold meetings according to guidelines.

2.   School will invite and encourage parents and community to assist with various events throughout the year, such as the annual Fall Festival.

3.   The volunteer coordinator will work with teachers, parents and the community to recruit and retain volunteers to assist in the classroom, tutor, perform clerical duties and other duties requested by staff.

 
Objective 3: Teachers and administrator will provide opportunities for activities that are coordinated with the curriculum to enable parents to share in their child's learning.

Action Plan:

1.   School will hold family-oriented activities that focus on literacy, math or social skills, such as Bingo 4 Books, Family Reading Night, Make and Take Workshops, etc.

2.   As part of the Reading First initiative, the school will send home reading books for the child to read with the parent. The parent will sign the reading log.

3.   Each teacher, student and parent is requested to sign an annual Compact outlining shared responsibilities for improving student acheivement.

4.   Teachers will share various activities for parents to complete with their students through KidMail, on teacher web pages and during parent conferences.

5.   School will sponsor various parenting workshops throughout the year.

 
Objective 4: Parents and the community are provided with opportunities to share in assessing school needs and developing goals related to students learning.

Action Plan:

1.   Parents (either as a whole or through a sampling) will be asked to complete various surveys throughout the year including an annual PRIDE survey.

2.   Parents will serve on all School Improvement Plan teams for collaborative decision-making.

3.   The principal will work with the Parent Advisory Team and the PTO for suggestions and input on school matters.

4.   An annual Needs Assessment will be distributed to each household.

5.   The principal may conduct parent and/or community meetings to discuss topics affecting the school and community.

 
Objective 5: The school will work with community organizations to provide students with the opportunity to learn through service by helping with essential services like physical and mental health care, food and clothing or whatever is needed.

Action Plan:

1.   School will complete at least one fund raising effort and one volunteer effort for community charities.

2.   School staff and student will maintain a positive relationship with BEST partners MainStreet Cleveland, River Counties Board of Realtors and the Elk's Club.

 
Evaluation: Evaluation will be based on the completion of each activity in the Action Plan listed above. A survey will also be distributed to parents each year to determine effectiveness of Community Engagement Programs.
