JONAH TOWE THANKFUL ÏOR HIS TEACHER — Jonah Towe, an 8-year-old Mayfield Elementary School student, is thankful for his teacher, Rachel Sampson, who taught him punctuation and other writing skills. JONAH POSES WITH TROPHY — Eight-year-old Jonah Towe proudly shows his trophy as the winner of the WTCI “PBS Kids Go!” National Writer’s Contest.
Jonah Towe, 8-year-old second grader from Mayfield Elementary School, has won the WTCI “PBS Kids Go!” National Writers Contest.

Towe’s story, “Aerosmith on the Roll,” took first place in 400 local entries and more than 40,000 children nationwide.

Towe said, “Aerosmith is my favorite band so I watched some videos and made up a story about the band being 12 hours late for a concert.

“The lead singer, Steven Tyler, finally realized the concert was supposed to be at 9 a.m., not 9 p.m.,” young Towe said. “After a lot of running around they finally went home and got some sleep.”

When asked why he won the contest, he replied, “I was pretty much surprised when I won. I think I won for good handwriting, a good idea and good punctuation. My teacher, Ms. Sampson, has helped me with punctuation this year.”

He added, “Me and my Dad are in a band, and we have written some songs. That was an inspiration.”

The writer’s contest is a national competition designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning.

Towe recieved a trophy, a gift bag and many books in addition to a big sense of accomplishment at the 2010 Award Ceremony for PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest held recently at WTCI’s Broadcast Center.

Towe hopes to continue writing and said, “I’ve always liked writing. Once I get older, like 20, I want to write a book.”
