CMS AD Scott Carroll Earns CAA Designation

Congratulations to CMS Athletic Director Scott Carroll for earning the Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) designation. This certification requires at least 5 years of experience, a recommendation from your principal, director of schools and one other CAA. It also requires National Interscholastic Athletic Administrator Association (NIAAA) course work that includes 12 hours of athletic law, administration foundation, and Title 9 classes and athletic leadership classes that Carroll took from Ohio University.  It also required a written thesis on athletic administration to be approved by National office and finally a 100 question test covering all of the above information. It took three years for Coach Carroll to complete this process and he should be commended for completing these rigorous requirements.  Carroll has been a member of the Tennessee Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrator Association for the last 8 years and has attended numerous conferences.

Bike Winners are Announced

Two CCS students are going to have a fun summer thanks to the Cleveland Masonic Lodge #134. These two students are the recipients of new bicycles from the Mason’s. All CCS students with perfect attendance were placed in a drawing for a Schwinn bicycle. The winners were Dathan Gaurdern from Arnold Elementary and Madison Dye from Blythe Bower. Congratulations to the fine young people as they proved that going to school every day can be profitable. Barry Phillips, a member of the local Mason’s group, said, “ We just wanted to do something for the schools to encourage and stress the importance of good attendance. It was great to see the excitement in the eyes of these two winners.” Phillips added that this program will continue next year and wants to encourage all students to do their best to be in school every day. The picture to the left is Blythe Bower student Madison Dye with her new bike, at right is Arnold Elementary student and bike winner Dathan Gaudern (Front) with Arnold Principal Kellye Bender, Bob Bradley, Barry Phillips, Patrick Googer from Cleveland Masonic Lodge #134, and CCS Supervisor Paul Ramsey.

Character Counts

The Box Full of Love

Todd was a sadly quiet 11-year-old struggling to adjust to the death of his mother. His father had left long ago, and Todd was living with an aunt who made it known she resented the responsibility.

On several occasions, his teacher Sheryl heard his aunt tell him, "If it weren’t for my generosity, you’d be a homeless orphan."

Sheryl took extra pains to make Todd feel valued in class and encouraged his interest in making things. Just before Christmas break, Todd shyly presented her with a small decorated box he’d made.

"It’s beautiful!" Sheryl gushed.

Todd replied, "There’s something special inside that my mom gave me before she died. She said it’s the one thing I can give and still have plenty left over. It helps you feel better when you’re sad and safe when you’re scared."

As Sheryl started to open the box, Todd warned her, "Oh, you can’t see it."

"Well, what is it?" Sheryl asked kindly.

"It’s love. You’re the first person since my mom that I love."

Sheryl hugged Todd tightly and said, "I’ll treasure this forever. It’s the best gift I ever got."

She kept it on her desk until she retired and touched it whenever she was sad or scared. It never failed to make her heart smile.

Years later, Todd sent her the tassel he wore during his graduation from medical school. It’s been in the box ever since.

In truth, love -- not diamonds -- is the gift that keeps on giving. What’s more, love generates itself. The more you give away, the more you have left.

This is Michael Josephson reminding you that character counts.
