Eighth grade students complete two major projects during the nine-week period--one in video editing and a multimedia project on careers.

During the video editing project, students are introduced to a variety of video terms and various video equipment. In addition to the computers, the lab is equipped with modern digital equipment including mini-DV camcorders, cameras, scanners, microphones, VCRs, and CD and DVD burners. After recording either live video or still photos, students edit their images and footage using the Pinnacle Studio 8 program. They learn to trim video clips, grab still frames, add transitions, create titles, add narration, and generate background music. Then they output their creations to VHS tapes, CDs, or DVDs. Students who desire to further develop their skills may use the classroom equipment to tape school activities for a memories video and/or create videos to be used by our WCMS news broadcast.

Because many of the students in the eighth grade class of Communications Technology have already had the sixth and seventh grade components, they are ready to put together a multimedia project. Career exploration is a state requirement for the technology classes; therefore, the multimedia project will involve researching a career of the student's choice. This may be done through a variety of sources including mentoring and job shadowing of a professional. He or she will present the gathered information using any combination of multimedia sources such as PowerPoint, web pages, and videos. The finished projects will be exhibited at the school.
