Hello! Thanks for visiting my page! My name is Evan Powell, and I am the School Counselor at Stuart Elementary School. This is a role that I truly enjoy! A bit about me...
I am originally from Hamilton, Ohio (near Cincinnati), and (I'm sorry) I am a big supporter of my Ohio teams. The list includes: Miami University, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Xavier, Dayton, Cincinnati Reds, and Cincinnati Bengals. Having grown up playing sports and closely following them, I have come to believe that sports can teach us a lot about life and equip us with a lot of life skills. Not a sports fan? That's okay! As long as you have an outlet that you enjoy, that is what counts! I also enjoy movies, music, drawing, traveling, and FOOD! : )
I am very happily married to Melyssa Powell, my wife of nearly 10 years. Melyssa is the 5th Grade Writing Teacher at Mayfield Elementary. We moved to Cleveland in 2010 to finish our education at Lee University, and, like many Lee Alums, we fell in love with the Cleveland/Chattanooga area. Prior to starting my work here in Cleveland, I worked for six years as a School Counselor at Dalton Middle School in Dalton, GA. I still enjoy counseling in the mental/behavioral health field part-time in the NW Georgia area. My pride and joy is our two year old daughter, Isla Reese.
In terms of my approach to counseling, I start out by utilizing the three principles of Person-Centered Therapy, which are acceptance, genuiness, and empathy. Often times, the person in counseling is seeking or deemed to be in need of a more "directive" approach from the therapist. In that regard, I tend to lean on principles from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is problem-focused and oriented toward the present ('here and now'). That is not to say that people's pasts and futures do not matter; they certainly do. I strive to meet clients where they are, though, and to help them learn to see situations differently. In turn, the hope is that my clients behave in more productive and successful ways and that they feel better.
I am here to help your child(ren) and to support your family! Please let me know if I can help! I can be reached by phone by calling Stuart Elementary School at 423-476-8246 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
