FEATURE: Mr. Chris Reid, The Heartbeat of Stuart Elementary's Library

In Stuart Elementary, there’s a quiet sanctuary where the magic of storytelling comes to life. This haven is none other than the school library, where Mr. Chris Reid inspires young minds.

Originally from Murphy, North Carolina, Mr. Reid started his educational journey at Western North Carolina University, earning a bachelor's degree in education with a focus on elementary. His dedication to shaping young minds spans an impressive 27-year career, which began in North Carolina before finding his home in Cleveland in 2000.

For a brief period, Mr. Reid traded the elementary world for the middle school, serving as a teacher at Cleveland Middle School. However, his heart brought him back to elementary education, where he has spent 22 years at Stuart Elementary.

In 2011, Mr. Reid obtained a master's degree in library and information science from Middle Tennessee State University. This achievement paved the way for his transition to the role of librarian at Stuart Elementary just two years ago, a move that brought him even closer to his passion for literature.

While Mr. Reid may be relatively new to the position of librarian, his commitment to reading has been steady throughout his career. He spent several years as a fifth-grade teacher at Stuart Elementary, during which he developed a unique tradition – reading "Gregor the Overlander" by Suzanne Collins aloud to each fifth-grade class.

Even in his current role, where he interacts with students from multiple grade levels daily, Mr. Reid continues to infuse his library sessions with the magic of storytelling. "It's fun because each grade level brings a different type of personality with them," he shared.

Mr. Reid's love for storytelling is evident in the animated performances he delivers while reading to his students. "When I read aloud, it allows me the chance to perform; it's like a script to me," he explains. Whether it's the growl of a mythical creature or the playful voice of a beloved character, Mr. Reid's storytelling captivates the imaginations of his young audience.

In the world of education, Mr. Reid is not just a librarian – he's a storyteller, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of students. We’re thankful to have you in Cleveland City Schools, Mr. Reid!
