Cleveland High School Wrestler Piper Fowler Secures Gold Medal Victory at U17 World Championships, Named World Champion

ISTANBUL, Turkey - On Thursday, Piper Fowler, a Junior at Cleveland High School, claimed a resounding 5-2 victory over her opponent, Lotta Englich of Germany, in the 73 kg category at the U17 World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. The triumph was a moment of pride for the United States, as the American national anthem resonated in the arena for the second time that night, celebrating Team USA's unparalleled success.

In recognition of Piper Fowler's extraordinary achievement, Dr. Russell Dyer, the Director of Schools for Cleveland City Schools, said, “Her journey to becoming a world champion is a testament to her character and the support she receives from her family, coaches, teammates, and the entire Cleveland community. We are so proud to have her represent Cleveland on the international stage.”

Cleveland High School Athletic Director, Al Morris, echoed the sentiment, "It's hard to even fathom what she just accomplished. We talk about state champions, but she is not just a U.S. champion; she is a national champion - out of all the countries in the world, she is number one. We're so proud of her."

Cleveland High School Wrestling Coach Josh Bosken traveled with Piper to Turkey for the World Championship, saying "Piper is a WORLD Champion. She’s a great student, great teammate, great sister, great daughter, and when you do everything the right way good things happen. Still hard to comprehend what she accomplished but couldn’t happen to a better kid and family. Cleveland is now home to a World Champion."

Additionally, Cleveland High School Wrestling Coach Joey Knox said "Piper is a great example of doing things right! She comes from a wrestling family that understands what it takes to win! All the way from her home family to her wrestling family. We could not be happier for Piper and the Fowler family! Cleveland Wrestling is blessed to be a part of her journey. "

Coach Knox said historically, the U17 World Championships have been a significant stepping stone for many young athletes, both boys and girls, who have gone on to compete at the highest level for the United States at the Olympic Games.

Congratulations to Piper!
