Cleveland City Schools Unveils New Career and Technical Education (CTE) Initiative Focused on Artificial Intelligence

Cleveland City Schools is set to embark on a groundbreaking educational journey as it introduces a new initiative aimed at revolutionizing the learning experience for students at Cleveland High and Cleveland Middle Schools. Commencing with the 2023-2024 academic year, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program will immerse students in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), thanks to generous funding from a state grant. This innovative initiative will feature the integration of advanced robots provided by RobotLab, a leading technology company.

“Artificial Intelligence is changing the landscape of information technology across the globe. We must harness this technology and teach students how to use it effectively while maintaining the integrity of their work,” commented  Dr. Russell Dyer, Director of Schools. “I look forward to seeing how this new program at Cleveland High School responsibly embraces the power of AI technology.”

Under the dynamic leadership of Cleveland High and Cleveland Middle Schools, administrators are dedicated to fostering an educational environment conducive to student success and adaptability in an ever-evolving world. Renny Whittenbarger, Supervisor of CTE, stressed the significance of preparing students to collaborate with AI rather than compete against it.

"AI technology is here to stay, and it is reshaping various industries," stated Whittenbarger. "It is our responsibility to prepare our students with the tools they need to adapt to this dynamic technological landscape. By introducing AI technology through the use of these robots, we aim to empower our students to work alongside AI as valuable assets and become future leaders in the tech-driven world."

"Embracing artificial intelligence is essential in preparing our students for the future AI job market," emphasized Principal Bob Pritchard. "It will empower them with invaluable skills and knowledge to excel in their careers and to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI-driven industries."

Principal Nat Akiona of Cleveland Middle School also expressed excitement about the inclusion of AI technology in the school's curriculum: "We are thrilled to introduce AI technology into our middle school curriculum at Cleveland Middle School. Providing our students with the opportunity to engage with such advanced technology at their age is truly exciting."

The state grant has facilitated the acquisition of two four-foot robots and six two-foot robots from RobotLab. These state-of-the-art robots will offer students an immersive learning experience, enabling them to explore AI technology in a practical and interactive manner. By nurturing skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and AI applications, Cleveland City Schools is taking a significant stride toward shaping a generation of graduates ready to thrive in a future driven by technology.
