Teacher Feature 📚 Dee Morris: 31 Years of Kindergarten Magic at Yates Primary

In the halls of Yates Primary, where young minds embark on their educational journeys, there is a kindergarten teacher who has inspired students for 31 years. Ms. Dee Morris celebrates her 35th year in the world of education this year. Her remarkable journey began at Blythe Avenue, which later evolved into Blythe-Bower Elementary School before she transitioned to Yates Primary.

Dee's journey at Yates Primary commenced under Dr. Donald P. Yates. She recalls, "Dr. Yates hired me and welcomed me into this incredible community of learners and educators." Her experience included the guidance of now Board Member Carolyn Ingram, who served as the school's principal, and a mentor to Ms. Morris. "She took me under her wing and really inspired me," Ms. Morris recalls. "I'm very grateful for the people who have gone before me, shaping the path for future educators like myself."

At Yates Primary, Ms. Morris found herself amidst a supportive community that believed in nurturing the potential of each child. "When I came to Yates, there were several people who showed me what it meant to be an excellent teacher," she explains. "Valerie Sharpe, who helped me plan lessons, Richelle Shelton, Courtney Robins, and Susie Whitlock were inspiring figures who contributed significantly to my growth as an educator."

One of her favorite memories at Yates Primary is the school's "red clay days." During these special occasions, the entire school would relocate its learning environment to Red Clay State Park. "We would do a rotation of various activities including art, dance, and storytelling," Dee recalls with a smile. "It was a way of building our community, which is the heart of education."

What sets Yates Primary apart in Ms. Morris' eyes is the intimate and personal atmosphere that permeates the Kindergarten through 2nd-grade environment. "We have a different feel than any other school in the system," she said. "Everything is more intimate and personal – I think that's what sets us apart."

But it's not just the atmosphere that has kept Ms. Morris at Yates Primary for over three decades; it's the extraordinary faculty she's been fortunate to work with. "Staying here all these years has been easy – especially with this faculty," Dee said. "This is one of the most intelligent and articulate faculties that I've ever worked with. Sometimes it's not about where you are but who you're with – who is on your team. This faculty inspires me every day."

Thank you for all your hard work in educating the minds of our students, Ms. Morris! Your dedication and love have left an indelible mark. We look forward to many more years of kindergarten magic!
