CMS spelling bee winner

The room was filled with anticipation as students took the stage for the 52nd Mildred Maupin Spelling Bee. After an incredible 54 rounds and 177 words, one student stood tall as champion: Alberto Palomino Salgado.

For Alberto and his family, the moment represented far more than a blue ribbon.

Alberto joined Cleveland City Schools as a second grader after moving from Louisiana. As an English Learner, he worked diligently to build his language skills and exited the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at the end of fourth grade. What once may have felt like a challenge has now become one of his greatest strengths.

“Alberto has always worked hard at everything he does,” his mother, Arcelia Salgado, shared. “We are so proud of him. He shows that with dedication and faith in yourself, you can achieve anything.”

Beyond the spelling bee stage, Alberto is a well rounded student who embraces every opportunity to grow. He plays the piano, participates in band, and competes on the soccer field. Whether in the classroom, on stage, or on the field, he leads with quiet determination and steady focus.

His mother says one of the things that makes her most proud is how he carries and lifts up their Hispanic heritage.

“He honors where we come from,” she said. “He works hard not just for himself, but for our family and our community.”

Reflecting on his accomplishment, Alberto shared, “I attribute all of my success to my faith in Jesus Christ.”

Dr. Jeff Elliott, Director of Schools, says Alberto’s journey reflects the heart of Cleveland City Schools.

“Alberto’s accomplishment is about much more than spelling words correctly,” said Dr. Elliott. “It represents perseverance, growth, and the power of opportunity. We are proud of the way he has embraced every challenge and turned it into strength. He is a wonderful example of what is possible when students are supported and encouraged.”

From learning English as a young student to mastering complex vocabulary on a competitive stage, Alberto’s story is a reminder that champions are built through courage, commitment, and community.
