At Cleveland High School, something truly special is taking place, and it all began with one studentβs idea.
Emma Grace Cloutier recognized an opportunity to bring people together in a meaningful way. From that vision, the schoolβs Best Buddies club was born, a student-led group focused on building friendships and creating a place where every student feels seen, valued, and included.
What began as a simple idea has quickly grown into something students look forward to each week. During club meetings, students gather to spend time together, share conversations, and enjoy each otherβs company. It is simple by design, but the impact is powerful.
βThis club is about connection,β Emma Grace shared. βIt has been really special to see friendships grow and to watch everyone feel included and supported.β
The club brings together students from across campus, including those in the special education program, creating opportunities for relationships that may not have formed otherwise. For many students, these moments have become the highlight of their week.
Special Education teacher Tressa Manning, who supports the club, says the impact is evident.
βYou can feel the difference when they are together,β Manning said. βThere is so much joy in the room. It is meaningful for all of our students, and it is something they truly look forward to.β
As the school year comes to a close, the group is planning one final gathering on April 16 to celebrate the friendships they have built during their first year.
Principal Bob Pritchard says the club reflects the very best of Cleveland High School.
βWe are so proud of Emma Grace and the leadership she has shown,β Pritchard said. βThis is what a positive school culture looks like when students take initiative and create something that makes a real difference in the lives of others.β
At Cleveland City Schools, moments like these remind us what school is truly about. It is not only academics. It is connection. It is belonging. It is students stepping up to care for one another in ways that matter.
