Teacher Feature: Latishua Scurlock, CHS

Mrs. Latishua Scurlock remembers the moment she accepted a job as a teacher at her alma mater, Cleveland High School.

“I remember dancing around my kitchen the moment I got the phone call,” Scurlock said. “It was a goal, I really wanted to be in Cleveland High School.”

Mrs. Scurlock graduated from Cleveland High School in 2009. She received a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Lee University four years later.

Her education journey started in Hamilton County but her love for Cleveland brought her back to the halls on Raider Drive.

“I wanted to be able to influence kids that don’t always connect with teachers,” Mrs. Scurlock said. “I’ve really felt like I’ve been able to do that here.”

It didn’t take long for her to realize that building relationships with her students was the foundation of their success.

“I want to inspire them and influence them,” Scurlock said. “I’ve really shifted my classroom to be a place where they want to be and that they feel loved, seen, and validated.”

Mrs. Scurlock has been married to her husband, Joshua, for six years. Together, they have two kids, Henry, 4, and Owen, 2.

“I am extremely blessed to be at Cleveland High School. I have grown so much in my career from being here. This place is full of incredible teachers that you can learn from.”

We are so lucky to have Mrs. Scurlock as a teacher in Cleveland City Schools!
