Cleveland City Schools is proud to announce Dr. Keri Miles as the new principal of Mayfield Elementary School beginning with the upcoming school year. For Dr. Miles, this new role is especially meaningful. She is a proud Cleveland City Schools graduate who attended Mayfield Elementary, Cleveland Middle School, and Cleveland High School. Now, she will return to Mayfield to serve the school community that helped shape her own educational journey. Dr. Miles currently serves as the 6th Grade Assistant Principal at Cleveland Middle School, where she has spent the past four years supporting students, encouraging teachers, and building relationships with families. Those who have worked alongside her know her as a caring and steady leader who understands the importance of helping students feel supported, known, and encouraged. “Dr. Miles understands the heart of Cleveland City Schools because she has experienced it as both a student and an educator,” said Dr. Jeff Elliott, Director of Cleveland City Schools. “She brings a strong background as a teacher, school counselor, and administrator, and she leads with compassion, experience, and a genuine commitment to students. We are excited to welcome her into this new role at Mayfield Elementary.” Dr. Miles has spent 21 years in education, serving as a teacher, school counselor, and administrator. She is entering her 22nd year in education and joined Cleveland City Schools in 2022. Candy’s Creek Cherokee Elementary School has been named a 2025-2026 Tree Campus by the Arbor Day Foundation, a recognition that celebrates the school’s commitment to trees, environmental education, hands-on learning, and community engagement. This recognition is a meaningful milestone for Candy’s Creek Cherokee and reflects the care, teamwork, and community partnerships that continue to help the campus grow as a beautiful and welcoming place for students, staff, families, and visitors. Mrs. Rebecca Lay, an educator at Candy’s Creek Cherokee Elementary School and leader of the school’s PTO, helped guide the effort to earn Tree Campus recognition. Through her work with students, families, staff, and community partners, Mrs. Lay supported the application process and helped champion the school’s continued focus on environmental education, outdoor learning, and campus beautification. “The young people of today are the environmental stewards of tomorrow. Mr. Nat Akiona has been named the next principal of Yates Primary School, and Mrs. Emily Raper has been named the new principal of Cleveland Middle School. Mr. Akiona currently serves as principal of Cleveland Middle School, where he has led since joining Cleveland City Schools in 2021. With more than 30 years of experience in education, Mr. Akiona brings a deep love for students and a heart for service. His move to Yates Primary marks a new chapter of service within Cleveland City Schools, where he will have the opportunity to support some of the district’s youngest learners and the educators who help build their foundation. “Mr. Akiona brings a wealth of school leadership experience to Yates,” said Dr. Jeff Elliott, Director of Schools. “He leads with drive and energy. We are excited for the Yates Primary families and community to experience his care, enthusiasm, and commitment to helping children grow.” “I have always enjoyed the world of elementary education,” Mr. Akiona said. “It is where miracles are considered daily accomplishments. Cleveland City Schools is proud to celebrate the career and upcoming retirement of Melissa Bishop, Principal of Yates Primary School, after more than 20 years of dedicated service to the district. Bishop was hired by Cleveland City Schools in August 2003. Since that time, she has poured her heart into the students, families, teachers, and staff of the district. Throughout her career, she has served as a teacher, instructional coach, instructional specialist, assistant principal, and principal. For the last two years, she has served as Principal of Yates Primary School. In every role, Bishop has been known for her steady leadership, deep care for students, and strong commitment to helping teachers and schools succeed. Her work strengthened support for students and teachers across the district and reflected her belief that every child deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, and succeed. “Melissa Bishop has made a lasting difference in Cleveland City Schools,” said Dr. Jeff Elliott, Director of Schools. “She has led with wisdom, kindness, and a genuine heart for children. Whether serving in the classroom, supporting teachers, or leading a school, Melissa has always kept students at the center of her work. Bentley brings a strong background in education, leadership, and student support to his new role. He has served as a physical education teacher since 2019, where he has led health and wellness initiatives, managed departmental budgets, and supported school operations as an attendance coordinator. Known for his commitment to building relationships and creating a positive school culture, Bentley has made a lasting impact on students and staff alike. He is a graduate of Lee University. Bentley has been recognized for his excellence in education, including being named Teacher of the Year at the school level for the 2024–2025 school year and receiving the Above and Beyond Award. Cleveland City Schools is proud to announce that Jordan Reeves will serve as the new Assistant Principal of E.L. Ross Elementary School. Reeves is a familiar and trusted face at Ross, where she has been teaching fourth grade since 2023. Known for creating a classroom environment built on care, connection, and high expectations, she has made a meaningful impact on both her students and her colleagues. Reeves was recently named Cleveland City Schools District Teacher of the Year for 2025 to 2026 and has advanced to the next level of competition. She is also a recipient of the Don Goff Innovation Award, recognizing her commitment to creative and impactful teaching. For Ross Elementary, this next step feels especially meaningful as the school looks ahead. “Jordan is already such an important part of the Ross community,” said Donald Benton, incoming Principal of E.L. Ross Elementary. “She has a natural ability to connect with students and support her colleagues in a way that builds trust and positivity. Please review the important information below to help make this a smooth and memorable evening. Graduation Friday, May 8, 2026 6:00 p.m. Raider Arena Ticket required for entry into Raider Arena. A non-ticketed live stream viewing area will be available in the CHS Theater. Arrival Graduates are required to arrive in the CHS lunchroom at least 45 minutes before the ceremony for registration and final instructions. Only graduates should report to the lunchroom during this time. Tickets Each graduating senior will receive 8 tickets for family and friends. Tickets will be distributed following the mandatory graduation practice. Graduates do not need a ticket to participate. A live stream will also be available in the CHS Theater for guests without tickets. Graduation Attire All graduates are expected to wear: Graduation gown, cap, and tassel Business professional attire underneath Please note: No jeans High heels are not recommended Only school-issued regalia is permitted Graduation caps may not be decorated Photos Information regarding professional graduation photos will be shared closer to the ceremony. At Cleveland Middle School, a group of students recently turned their STEM learning into an act of compassion and service. Students in Coach Derek Morris’ STEM class partnered with students in the school’s ERC classroom to help solve a daily challenge faced by some of their peers. Together, they designed and created adaptive tools to help students who use wheelchairs open doors more easily throughout the school. What began as a classroom project quickly became something much more meaningful. STEM students worked alongside their classmates to better understand their needs, then applied problem solving and engineering skills to create practical tools that improve accessibility around campus. The collaboration allowed students to see firsthand how innovation can make a real difference in the lives of others. “This project represents the very best of what learning can look like,” said Nat Akiona, principal of Cleveland Middle School. “Our students saw a need, worked together, and used their creativity and STEM skills to help their classmates. I am incredibly proud of their compassion and the way they stepped up to support one another.” Dr. Jeff Elliott, Director of Schools for Cleveland City Schools, said the project reflects the kind of character and leadership the district hopes to develop in every student. “Our students are not only developing important STEM skills, they are learning empathy, collaboration, and how to serve their community,” Elliott said. “When students use their knowledge and creativity to help others, that is learning at its very best.” The experience strengthened relationships between students across classrooms and showed how powerful collaboration can be when students are encouraged to think creatively and care for one another.
